An exceptional mid 19th century Italian gilt wood and scagliola CENTRE TABLE circa 1850

Description

The circular top with polychrome floral decoration on an elaborately gilt wood carved base and feet.

Provenance: By repute supplied to Howe Browne, 2nd Marquess of Sligo (1788-1845)

Scagliola. Composition in imitation of marble and other ornamental stones, consisting of finely ground gypsum-based plaster mixed with animal glue and pigment. The technique came into fashioon during the Renaissance and used in architecture and sculpture as well as furniture making.
